Adele is close behind

The nominees for the MTV European Music Awards (yes, these are a thing) were released Tuesday, and to no one’s surprise, they are dominated by globe-spanning pop juggernauts Beyoncé and Justin Bieber, each with five nominations; Adele is close behind with four.

All the other usual suspects make appearances, too: Kanye West, Coldplay, Sia, Rihanna, Lady Gaga… in fact, between the overwhelming show from the Americans, Canadians, and a smattering of lucky Brits, it turns out the European awards show list is short on other continental European artists. (Repping the continent are Denmark’s Zara Larsson and Lukas Graham, Dutch DJs Afrojack and Martin Garrix, and French legend David Guetta.) Another fun fact: four of the five men nominated for “Best Male” are Canadian, with one Scotsman in the mix (Calvin Harris).

Intriguingly, the European awards also have some different categories from their stateside counterparts—namely, “Best Live,” “Biggest Fans,” and “Best World Stage,” giving these an edge of their own. The awards will take place Nov. 6 in Rotterdam, Netherlands; online voting is now open.
